The Hybrid Heaters of the Future

In our last blog we discussed how new government regulations concerning the efficiency of water heaters could mean cramped quarters in your closet. We briefly touched on hybrid water heaters, and wanted to circle back to discuss how this new technology will be affecting your plumbing in the future.

Hybrid water heater technology has been years in the making. As time progresses the technology will only get better. The few models on the currently on the market can save homeowners hundreds of dollars in energy costs each year, and there are many more designs in the works.

Basically, these types of water heaters use electricity to move heat from one place to the other. They transfer heat from the surrounding air into the water in your tank. What makes these units “hybrid” is that, in times of high usage the heater will switch to over the generate heat with electricity instead of just transferring it.

While these new units are currently larger than their predecessors, the benefits of energy efficiency will soon cause engineers to design smaller models that will fit perfectly in your home.
